Human Shampoo on a Dog? Dog Shampoo on a Cat?

Human shampoo isn't built for a pet's skin. Once, in a pinch, is not a disaster — but it shouldn't become the habit. Dog shampoo on a cat is the riskier of the two, because a cat licks everything back off himself afterwards and swallows whatever was left in the coat.

The scene everybody has been in

The dog is already wet. You reach for his bottle, squeeze, and nothing comes out.

Yours is sitting right there, half a metre away.

No need to feel bad about it — almost everyone has stood in that bathroom. The question is what to do this time, and what to do differently next time.

The pH explanation, in one sentence a person would actually say

Human skin sits more acidic than dog skin.

That's it. No numbers to memorise. Our shampoo is tuned for the more acidic surface, so on the more neutral one it cleans a little too hard.

Which is why once changes nothing. It's washing your hands with dish soap — your hands survive. Do it daily for ten days and you'll notice.

Used regularly, the end of that road is dry skin and a dog who scratches, at which point people go looking for an anti-itch shampoo when the cause is in the bottle they're already using.

If you genuinely have nothing

Rinse with plain warm water.

Water alone removes most of the dirt and dust anyway. The greasy film it can't shift will wait a day or two without anything getting worse.

If you do decide to use yours, dilute it in water first, use as little as possible, keep it away from the face and ears, and rinse for longer than you think is enough.

The direction people overlook: dog and cat

The question always arrives as a pair, but the two directions don't carry the same risk.

Cat shampoo on a dog is the safe one. Cat formulas are usually milder to start with, and the worst case is that it doesn't quite cut through the grime on a big, thick-coated dog.

Dog shampoo on a cat is the one to watch, and the reason is behaviour rather than skin. A cat licks himself dry after every bath. Anything left in the coat ends up in his mouth — it isn't a matter of touching the skin and being done.

The absolute rule: never put a dog's flea and tick shampoo on a cat. Some ingredients a dog tolerates, a cat cannot. There's no room to experiment there.

A bottle that clearly states it's for dogs and cats was built that way on purpose. That's a different thing from a guess.

Why we make one bottle for dogs, cats and exotics

When the formula was being designed, the easier commercial route was a dog bottle and a cat bottle — two sales per household instead of one.

We went the other way: make it gentle enough for the most sensitive animal in the house, and it covers the rest by itself.

In practice that means no SLS, no heavy fragrance, a light scent, and a formula that rinses out easily. The last one matters most to cats, because the more easily it rinses, the less is left for them to swallow.

So the 500 ml shampoo is the same bottle for the whole household. What changes between them is the scent, not the formula.
